What is a Safe space?

A Safe space provides an attractive and economical alternative to wall padding. It can be described as a 'room within a room' and can fill the whole of a small room or fit in part of a larger room. Because of the Safe space's unique design, no additional building work is required and it allows for the continued use of existing facilities. Windows, radiators, plug sockets and lights can all be used normally outside the reach of the person inside.

Safe Spaces

Safe spaces are made with industrial strength PVC walls which are positioned at least 25cm away from your room walls. This PVC, pulled taut on a steel frame, flexes outwards to absorb impacts. This combined with the 8cm thick padded floor reduces the risk of someone harming themselves on walls, floors and furniture outside the Safe space.

Each Safe space is custom designed, with both the door and window(s) aligned with those in the room. Also available are zipped panels to access fitted wardrobes or alcoves and viewing panels (with or without zips) for use with televisions and sensory equipment positioned outside the Safe space.

Safe Spaces Information

Who are they for?

Safe spaces are used for people who may be at risk of harm in an ordinary room. Commonly a Safe space is used to help care for those with challenging or destructive behaviour or those who self-harm. Most of our clients are people with autism or other learning difficulties, however other clients have been at risk from hard surfaces due to such conditions as epilepsy or cerebral palsy.

What other benefits are there?

Because the Safe space has a gap around the outside, the person inside cannot bang on the room walls. This has shown to greatly reduce noise disturbance to neighbours and other family members. Also reported is a calming influence on those with autism and better sleep patterns (for parents and carers too!)

How big is a Safespace?

Safe spaces are custom made in many sizes depending on the size of your room and the needs of the person using them. The largest Safe space we make is 3m x 3m. Some basic room measurements are all we need to provide you with an individual design and free quote.

The Safe Space as a Bedroom

Most Safe spaces are fitted in people’s homes as bedrooms. They are fitted to help parents and carers meet the challenges of caring for someone with no sense of personal safety or the safety of others. They are also fitted to help with the demands of caring for people, particularly children, who have poor sleep patterns.
